Renewing your Permit

As many Ohio Concealed Carry License holders find their permits up for renewal, we are experiencing many calls and much confusion as to the process for renewal.

About 100,000 Ohio residents have a permit to carry a concealed handgun with many of them expiring this year. The renewal process has been streamlined since the law was first passed in 2004. It is a very simple process, but permit holders must complete the renewal within the time limits set by the law or they will have to retake the entire course.

Permit holders can renew up to 90 days prior to their license expiring and up to 30 days after. According to the Ohio Attorney General's Frequently Asked Questions about Ohio's Concealed Handgun Law publication, during the 30 day grace period after expiration, your license remains valid and you may carry your handgun during this period.

Permit holders must have a copy of their original training certificate when applying for a renewal. If a copy is not available and the original permit was issued at Brown or Clermont counties, it is not necessary to provide a copy of the original certificate as long as the renewal is completed at the issuing county.

For those who have relocated to another county since first receiving their permit or have received their permit at another county, Straight Creek Firearms will hold renewal classes on an as-needed basis throughout the year. The renewal course consists of a short orientation and refresher, a 50 question test and a qualification shoot.

The renewal process is very simple. All that is needed is the $55 fee, a new passport type photograph and a completed CCW permit application. The Clermont County Sheriff's office accepts applications on Tuesday – Thursday from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Brown County Sheriff's office accepts applications on Tuesday and Wednesday but requires an appointment by calling Deputy Green:

378-4435, extension 113.

The new concealed carry license will be good for five years, compared to the current one, which was only good for four years. For complete information on what you need to do to renew your license:
